For those of you who may not be acquainted with the life and work of Lewis Sperry Chafer, Chafer was the counterpart and contemporary of the uber famous C.I Schofield, of prominent evangelist J. Wilbur Chapman, and for 6 years was the song leader for the great Ohio evangelist A.T. Reed. He also co-founded and served as the first President of Dallas Theological Seminary.
In all my readings of theological works, which include a number of well known authors and theologians, none have been so scholarly, nor written with as much evangelistic fervor, as Lewis Sperry Chafers Systematic Theology. This work, in my own humble opinion, is unmatched in scope, subject, depth of knowledge, and in its appeal that its readers "be doers of the word and not" merely hearers only. This the author states from the outset of his work, and never waivers throughout its pages to implore his reader "to be busy about his Fathers business." It is a Masterpiece of Systematic Dispensational Theology that has been lost in our day to the injury of Bible Believers everywhere.
"In this age, as in no other, there is a specific message to be preached to every creature and, while there are leadership men who are God’s gift to the Church, the obligation to witness rests upon every Christian alike. Too much recognition cannot be given to the uncounted multitudes of faithful witnesses who are discharging their commissions as Sunday School teachers, mission workers, personal soul-winners, and as living exponents of divine grace. This is the God-appointed New Testament evangelism. The latent evangelizing forces of a congregation of believers are beyond all human calculation; but they need to be trained for their task, and God has prescribed definitely that they should be trained. How else will they be accurate and skillful even in their limited sphere of service? That they are to be trained is indicated in Ephesians 4:11, 12. There it is stated that the gifted men—apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers, especially the pastors and teachers—are appointed to the task of “perfecting the saints for the work of the ministry”; that is, the ministry which is committed to the saints." –Lewis Sperry Chafer Systematic Theology
Though at times he, as many of the theologians of this time (Larkin, Scofield, Haldeman, et al.), appeals to the original tongues of Holy Writ, there is no doubt that his work is to be held in the highest esteem and is worthy of its place among the other heralded theological books of Christendom.
